Charlotte Hornets legend, NBA ambassador, Tyrone Curtis “Muggsy” Bogues has been nominated for the “North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame”.
The Baltimore, Maryland native played for the legendary Bob Wade at Dunbar High School. Muggsy later went to Wake Forest University, where he finished his career as the ACC leader in steals and assists. With the 6th pick, in the 1988 expansion draft, the Charlotte Hornets selected Tyrone Bogues from the Washington Bullets. Muggsy played a total of 14 seasons in the NBA with the Washington Bullets (know known as the wizards), Hornets, Warriors and Raptors. Muggsy is still the Hornets all-time leader in minutes played (19,768), assists (5,557), steals (1,067), and turnovers (1,118).
During his time in Charlotte, he became a staple in the community and local legend. He was 5’3, but played like a giant on the floor, never backing down from a challenge. Muggsy made kids everywhere believe that they could conquer giants. One of his biggest movies was starring alongside Michael Jordan in Space Jam. The Charlotte community loves Muggsy and has permanently adopted him and his family. Muggsy started “Always Believe Inc.”, a non-profit and during the Christmas holiday he would dress like Santa Clause and deliver toys to needy families.
