In the words of the great Marshawn Lynch:
Take care of y’all mentals, y’all bodies and y’all chicken.
Sunday December 29, 2019 the season of “Missed Opportunities” concluded. When Greg Olson was substituted out of the game, presumably for the last time, it was to a standing ovation. While there hasn’t been anything official regarding Olson, on January 14, 2020 the Heart and Soul of the defense, Luke Kuechly, announced his abrupt retirement. When I heard the news it was like a surreal feeling as I felt immediate sadness. As I watched his heartfelt retirement video, one thought came to my head: In the words of Gerry Vaillancourt, “Luke Solved the riddle.” Luke at 28 years old walked away from the game he loves on his own terms and I commend him for making that brave decision. I will never forget that emotional scene of Luke crying after receiving a concussion against the Saints in 2016. The Brothers at Under Construction wish you well on your future endeavors.
What’s Next?
Welcome to the new era of Panthers Football! Luke retiring signals a complete retool for the home team. I would look into moving on from Cam Newton, and trust Joe Brady and Matt Rhule to develop a young prospect. I would take an honest look at Tua Tagovailoa, attempt to trade up if possible, if the price is too high to trade up for him I would take a deep look at Derrick Brown from Auburn, Isaiah Simmons from Clemson or Tristan Wirfs from Iowa. Honestly I wouldn’t bank on the playoffs for the next few seasons while we transition. Finally I would love to see Luke come back in a coaching or consulting role, but I would love for him to take extended time away from football to recharge and regroup.

Next Stop, Canton!
Luke Kuechly, arguably the best Panther ever, will be inducted into the pro football Hall of Fame. Over the course of his eight year career, he’s been to the pro bowl 7 times, 7 times named an all pro. Additionally he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, 8 years of sustained excellence. People may complain that he didn’t play long enough, but retiring before 30 seems to be the new normal in the NFL. We can’t penalize the player for becoming smarter about their health, the player is more knowledgeable about CTE and the NFL even paid out huge settlements for concealing information. The voting committee must adjust Hall of Fame standards and will surely induct generational talents like Patrick Willis and Luke Kuechly. Thank you Luke for taking care of your Mind, Body and more importantly your Chicken!
Kudos to you on a wonderful career!
