The Malik Monk experience has been a roller coaster to say the least, the lack of consistency has been frustrating, prompting Hornets and NBA fans to ask if he’s a bust. Heading into all-star weekend, Malik has been averaging 17.3 ppg over the past ten games. More importantly Malik has been more efficient, shooting 48% from the floor and 38% from three. The most encouraging sign, is that Malik is playing inspired on the defensive end. He’s finally getting it, Malik is finally getting it!

In his most recent interview with Rick Bonnell , of the Charlotte observer, Malik cites the biggest thing holding him back was his lack of preparation. Coming from Arkansas, to Kentucky to Charlotte can be tough thing for a 19 year old to digest. Mentorship is a big factor in his growth; Kemba, Marvin and Biz have been instrumental in his maturation on and off the floor. In his first year, coming off an injury, Monk played sparingly and showed flashes of what Hornets fans were excited for. This past offseason Monk gained 20 pounds and started driving to the basket more frequently and utilizing his god given athleticism.
I’m excited to see the progression of Malik and where continued hard work will take him. I’m excited to see Monk lead the youth movement! What are your thoughts? Is the new normal or fool’s gold? Was Steve Clifford and James Borrego vindicated in benching Malik?
